This was another “easy” shot with my 105mm macro and natural light; no reversed lens needed for this huge infant. A mere nymph, these stout grasshoppers are able to emerge in Spring already so large because they over-winter as nymphs, not eggs. I shot this on April 3rd, still early Spring in Colorado. There were still patches of snow on the ground, and several more snowstorms were to come. Despite this, early Spring in my backyard abounds with more insect activity than usual. On days that the sun has warmed the ground, it’s wriggling with newly emerged Grasshoppers, Spiders, Leaf-hoppers, and Milkweed Bugs. By late Spring, this activity has dispersed.

I used my 24mm prime lens reverse mounted for this close up.
